Carel’s Universe commemorates the retirement of Professor Carel Stolker, on 8 February 2021, as Rector Magnificus and President of the Executive Board of Leiden University. We had hoped to be able to put on an exhibition in the monumental hall of Oude UB, the building in which he spent eight years working as Rector and President. Owing to the coronavirus measures, this exhibition has to be online instead.
Academic collections form the basis of almost all the Leiden museums, and we can see this heritage in all these different collections. This exhibition, curated by Pieter ter Keurs, Professor of Museums, Collections and Society, is therefore also an ode to Leiden as city of science and city of museums and collections.
